Green Jobs: Innovative Silicon Valley Program Trains and Places Green Professionals
SolarTech Workforce Innovations Collaborative, an initiative of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, offers an innovative job training program for professionals who aspire to work in the solar or energy efficiency industries.
According to Mercury News, the program has a unique model, since it maintains contact with cleantech employers to find out what they're looking for in new hires. Then, in partnership with NOVA, a local job training organization, SolarTech trains the professionals in those areas, then helps the professionals to find green jobs. The program is attractive to both professionals and employers, who can spend less time with the hiring process.
So far, the program has trained 255 professionals through 8 to 10 week classes at community colleges. It has placed 121 of the graduates in green jobs. David McFeely, the program's manager, believes more graduates will be placed soon.
The program is funded by a $4 million grant from California's Employment Development Program, but it is scheduled to end in June. However, SolarTech hopes to continue with funding from private investors.
